Company: YUDU Self-publishing platform for web, iPad & iPhone

Brief: YUDU should win the award for best digital publishing platform as we continue to innovate and develop our publishing platform to help content owners all over the world to reach new audiences/customers, save money on print and distribution, generate revenue and now harness the power of the App Store. The YUDU platform caters for all publishers – from individuals to professional publishers. Our recent innovations to the Pro platform mean not only is it the first solution to enable self-publishing to the iPad via branded Apps, it’s also the first to solve the iPad subscriptions problem, enabling subscription sales via the App Store.

Latest Development Objectives: To expand the YUDU platform to support iPad format, enabling self-publishing of content into branded iPad/iPhone Apps. The technology should integrate seamlessly with the current platform, developed originally for the creation of page–turning online digital editions, therefore enabling cross-platform publishing with one original source file, using one simple workflow.

To enable publishers to harness the power of Apple products and marketing and sell iPad subscriptions via the App Store, as well as single issues.

Strategy: The YUDU ePublishing Platform

The YUDU ePublishing platform is a software-as-a-service self-publishing solution – an innovative online ePublishing portal that makes it simple to publish digital editions online and now also into branded iPad Apps in the App Store.

We offer numerous publishing access levels; Free accounts offer free online publishing and an eLibrary to store and share content; ‘Plus’ accounts enable publishers to enhance and sell publications on the YUDU.com library; and Pro accounts enable advanced professional publishing for web and iPad.

The platform is quick and easy to use and gives the publisher full control over their ePublishing process. Customers log in, upload their base PDF and enhance with live links and multimedia. Using the same workflow and base PDF, Pro publishers can create both online and iPad editions.

The iPad development in June 2010 has made YUDU the first platform to enable self-publishing to the iPad via branded Apps, which publishers can sell or offer for free in Apple’s App Store. YUDU create a branded App for the publisher and manage the Apple approval process to get the Apps live in the App Store. Once live, publishers use the platform to self-publish into their Apps, essentially creating a new marketing and distribution channel where they can control what and when the reader sees. Push notifications inform users when new editions are available.

The iPad element also offers a unique subscription tool that enables publishers to sell multiple-month options in advance (e.g. 3, 6, 12 month block purchase), ideal for time sensitive paid-for content, previously not possible due to Apple’s approval time-lag for paid titles. Whatever the publisher places within the subscription folder in the YUDU platform becomes available to subscribers, without the need to go through the Apple approval process each time.

The platform is a quick, easy and cost effective way to publish cross-platform and harness the power and popularity of the App Store with in-app subscription purchases.
