Brief: The discovery of timely, relevant and trusted information is an increasing challenge for the scientific librarians and researchers that Elsevier serves. We strive to maintain a deep understanding of librarian and researcher content requirements and are focused on ensuring that we continue to deliver the highest quality solutions to our customers. As an information services provider and publisher, we consider ourselves as a collaborative partner with the customers we serve, which is why we have introduced the recently launched SciVerse Applications beta (www.applications.sciverse.com).

We are applying for the awards of Best Integrated Content Strategy, Best Digital Publishing Platform Innovation and Best Website with the intent of demonstrating the commitment we continuously maintain to deliver innovative content solutions to our users. The recent launch of SciVerse Applications beta offers a common ground for the collaborative development of applications that address the scientific research challenges the communities we serve face today. We have introduced this marketplace and developer network to allow over 15 million users worldwide to build, find and use applications that enhance the research experience across all of the scientific, technical and medical (STM) content and related products included in the SciVerse suite.

OBJECTIVE: By introducing application developers to our researcher and librarian communities within the SciVerse suite, we aim to facilitate collaboration among these constituencies to identify specific needs within research workflows, and then create the solutions to those needs. Developers will be able to access content within SciVerse, via APIs, to create fee-based or free applications. Institutions may select Applications to be shared throughout their organizations, while individual users may choose Applications from the application gallery to customize their SciVerse experience. Applications can access data from hundreds of millions of articles, abstracts and other scientific information within SciVerse, and integrate into key parts of the SciVerse user interface such as search results pages and article and record views across all SciVerse products.

In addition to SciVerse Applications beta, the SciVerse suite includes SciVerse ScienceDirect (www.sciencedirect.com), the world’s largest source of peer-reviewed content containing more than 10 million articles, and SciVerse Scopus (www.scopus.com), an abstract and citation database containing 41 million records and nearly 18,000 titles from 5,000 publishers worldwide. In addition, SciVerse Hub Beta (www.hub.sciverse.com) enables researchers to perform a single search across all of the SciVerse content as well as targeted web content.

STRATEGY and RESULTING LAUNCH: The introduction of SciVerse Applications beta to the suite adds a collaborative component at a level that was not previously possible among our users within our products. By partnering with institutions and companies driving the development of applications that enhance the research experience, we were able to launch with more than a dozen new search and discovery applications designed to offer a preliminary illustration of the capabilities of the new platform. As academic and commercial developers build and share new apps, SciVerse Applications beta will be populated with innovative and tailored solutions. To support the collaboration and ideation of the new applications, the new offering also includes a discussion forum for researchers and librarians who are registered SciVerse users to contribute application ideas as well as an opportunity for developers to connect with each other and commercial companies. Developers therefore have an opportunity to reach the global scientific community, while also gaining recognition for their contribution to search and discovery.
